Isle of Wight Fort walk at Bembridge / St Helens
18 August 2009 10:31
The annual walk to the fort is due on the Isle of Wight on Saturday the 22nd August 2009.
(Low tide is at 19.33 Hrs so you have to be at least an hour before possibly 1.5 hrs)

The Fort situated in the Solent just off Bembridge & St Helens is accessible by foot on a very low tide a few times a year; you walk along a shingle causeway leading from Bembridge (starting by Ducie Avenue). In 2007 about 3000 people went on the walk, last year it was a total washout with torrential rain & higher than expected tides (due to the strong winds).

No one is responsible for this meet, its only arranged by word of mouth throughout the Bembridge area – for this reason there are no organizers, you go purely at your own risk.  You also must be fit to walk a few miles at a good rate as you can get cut off!

Quango tells Government to ban homes with low EPCs
14 August 2009 12:31
Extract from the Estate Agent Today14.08.09
****************************

Properties with poor Energy Performance Certificate ratings should be banned from the property market, according to the Energy Saving Trust.

It is calling on the Government to introduce a law that would ban properties with F and G ratings from being sold or rented out from 2015 onwards.

The quango, which employs 140 staff and costs £43m a year to run, was once slated as one of Britain’s most useless quangos, along with the likes of the British Potato Council.

A spokesperson said: “We believe grants, financing packages and advice should make it possible for everyone who wants to act to do so in the next few years.

“But the danger of climate change is so important that, for people who choose not to act between now and 2016, regulation has to be considered to drive action on the most energy inefficient homes.”

The spokesman did not explain how historic properties, such as Grade One and Two listed cottages and castles, could be upgraded to comply.

Nick Salmon, founder of SPLINTA, said: “If the EST had made this proposal with a timescale of decades rather than just five short years, it might have some credibility, but to advocate a ban on the sale and rental of low energy efficiency properties by 2015 is so ludicrous as to be laughable.

“SPLINTA has always held the view that eventually the Government would penalise owners of low energy efficiency property via increased Council Tax, but never envisaged anything as draconian as a ban on sales and rentals.

“It’s fortunate that there’s an election coming as this discredited and decaying government might just be daft enough to think the EST is right.”

EAT says: If you wish to speed up the process of climate change by creating more hot air and commenting in detail on this suggestion, by all means do so, but we would welcome evidence of any quango that is doing a useful job.
